I run my own newsletter — Trusted Tool Guide Newsletter — on Beehiiv, which means this Beehiiv review isn’t the usual “I signed up for a trial and wrote up my impressions” kind of piece. It’s the working notes of someone who uses the platform daily, has set up custom domains and ad network integrations, and has migrated readers into and out of the tool.
Beehiiv is the newsletter platform I actually recommend to serious operators in 2026. Pick Beehiiv if: you’re building a newsletter as a business — paid subscriptions, sponsorships, ad revenue, or plans to monetize your audience directly. The built-in ad network alone can cover the platform cost at 10K+ subscribers, and the referral rewards and boosts network are the best growth infrastructure in the newsletter space.
Skip Beehiiv if: you’re running email as a marketing channel for a different product (e-commerce, SaaS, a course you sell elsewhere). In that case a traditional email marketing tool like MailerLite is cheaper and more feature-appropriate for you.

What Beehiiv Actually Is
Beehiiv launched in 2021 by former Morning Brew team members, which is important context — they built the platform they wished they’d had when growing a real newsletter business. That DNA shows up in what Beehiiv prioritizes: things newsletter operators care about that traditional email marketing tools ignore.
Concretely, Beehiiv does five things that competing tools either don’t do or do badly:
- Native ad network. Real advertisers pay to appear in your newsletters, matched to your audience by Beehiiv’s marketplace. This is a genuine revenue channel, not just a “feature.”
- Boosts. A paid recommendations network where you can pay other newsletters to plug yours, and get paid when yours plugs theirs. This is how newsletters actually grow in 2026.
- Native paid subscriptions. Stripe integration for paid tiers with zero platform fee (unlike Substack’s 10%).
- Referral rewards. Gamified list growth where your subscribers refer friends and unlock milestones you configure (free swag, premium content, etc).
- Full custom domain + website hosting. Your newsletter has its own real website with a blog-like archive, not a Substack-hosted subdomain.
Traditional email marketing tools (MailerLite, Kit, ActiveCampaign) don’t have any of the top three items. Substack has native paid subscriptions but takes 10% forever and has no ad network or paid boosts. Beehiiv is genuinely the only platform doing all five.

The free plan is unusually generous. Unlimited emails, all core features, ad network access, referral program, boosts marketplace — all included up to 2,500 subscribers. Most tools cripple their free tier to force upgrades. Beehiiv doesn’t.
The Scale plan is where most serious operators live. At 10,000 subscribers Beehiiv costs about $49/month. Sounds like real money until you realize the ad network at that list size typically generates $500-$2,000/month in ad revenue. On my own newsletter I’ve had months where ad revenue was 8-10x the platform cost — and that’s without any subscription monetization.

What Beehiiv Does Well (From Actually Using It)
The onboarding is fast
I had a Beehiiv publication set up, styled, and sending in under an hour. That includes DNS records for a custom domain, a welcome email flow, a subscribe form, and my first issue draft. This is dramatically faster than the equivalent setup on MailerLite or ActiveCampaign, both of which have significantly more surface area to configure.
The ad network works
I was skeptical of the “native ads” pitch when I signed up. It felt like the kind of thing that sounds good in marketing but never pays out. It pays out. Real brands, real CPMs, no chasing anyone. You approve ads before they run and Beehiiv handles all the invoicing and payment.
You won’t get rich from ad network revenue at 500 subscribers. You will start seeing meaningful checks around 5,000-10,000 engaged subscribers, and it grows roughly linearly from there.
Boosts are a real growth channel
Beehiiv Boosts let you pay per-subscriber to be recommended by other newsletters. You set a rate (say, $2 per verified subscriber), other newsletter operators plug you when it fits their audience, and Beehiiv verifies engagement before you’re charged.
The reason this works: you’re not buying spammy cold traffic. You’re paying for warm subscribers who genuinely opted into a related newsletter. Retention rates on Boost-acquired subscribers on my list have been in the 60-70% range, versus 20-30% for the paid ads I’ve tested elsewhere.
The editor is genuinely good
Clean, block-based, fast. Not the minimalist Substack editor (which some writers prefer) but not the bloated ActiveCampaign editor either. Right in the middle — enough features to build a real newsletter, not so many that you get lost in options.
Analytics that actually help
Beehiiv’s analytics go past opens and clicks. You get engagement scoring per subscriber, funnel analysis (where in your welcome sequence people drop off), revenue attribution when someone becomes a paid subscriber, and segment-level analytics. This is genuinely useful for running a newsletter as a business, not just as a hobby.
What Beehiiv Doesn’t Do Well
The honest counterweight to a review that’s mostly positive — here’s where Beehiiv is genuinely worse than alternatives:
Marketing automation is basic
Welcome series, milestone-based emails, and simple drip sequences work fine. If you need conditional branching, lead scoring, tag manipulation across multiple flows, or CRM-adjacent automation logic — Beehiiv can’t do it. That’s ActiveCampaign territory. Not built for e-commerce
No cart abandonment flows. No product recommendation blocks. Limited integrations with Shopify and WooCommerce. If email is how you sell products, Beehiiv is the wrong tool. MailerLite handles this much better at a lower price point.
Landing page builder is minimal
You get subscribe forms and a decent newsletter archive site, but there’s no full landing page builder for lead magnets or campaign pages. MailerLite includes this. If you rely on lead-magnet-based list growth, you’ll need a separate tool.
Template library is limited
Beehiiv’s newsletter templates are clean but there aren’t many. If you want a big library of niche-specific starting points, tools like Mailchimp or MailerLite have far more. In practice, I’ve never wanted a specific template Beehiiv didn’t have — but if you rely on template variety, know that in advance.
Beehiiv vs the Alternatives
Beehiiv vs Substack
The comparison most people search for. Beehiiv wins on economics (no 10% subscription fee, native ad network), ownership (custom domain, real website), and growth tools (Boosts, referrals). Kit is more expensive at every list size, has better creator-monetization products (paid tip jars, digital product sales), and has deeper automation. Beehiiv has better native newsletter monetization (ad network, boosts) and dramatically better pricing. If you sell digital products directly to your list, Kit’s ecosystem might justify the premium. If your monetization is newsletter-native (subscriptions, ads, sponsorships), Beehiiv wins.
Who Should Actually Use Beehiiv
Concrete profiles, based on the newsletter operators I know who use Beehiiv well:
- Content-first operators. Journalists, writers, analysts publishing regular content and monetizing through subscriptions and ads.
- Newsletter-as-product businesses. Free daily/weekly newsletters that make money via sponsorships, ads, or premium tiers.
- Creators who left Substack. If the 10% fee bothers you or you want to own your domain and audience, Beehiiv is the drop-in upgrade.
- Growing newsletters with real ambitions. Anyone north of 1,000 subscribers who plans to hit 25,000+ within 12-24 months. Beehiiv’s growth tools scale better than the alternatives.
And, honestly, who shouldn’t: solopreneurs selling courses through email, e-commerce operators, agencies handling multiple client email lists, and anyone whose email strategy is “occasional promotional emails to support my main product.” Those use cases are better served by MailerLite or a similar traditional email marketing tool.

Beehiiv is the newsletter platform I’d pick again in 2026 if I were starting from zero. The economics are honest, the tooling is genuinely built for newsletter businesses (not repurposed marketing software), and the growth infrastructure (boosts, referrals, ad network) is the best in the category by a meaningful margin.
It’s not the right tool for everyone — if your email strategy is marketing-support for a different business, a traditional email marketing tool is cheaper and more appropriate. But if you’re building a newsletter as its own thing, this is the correct choice.
